Sweetwater is a city in both Monroe and McMinn Counties, located in southeast Tennessee. The majority of the city is in Monroe County. The county seat of Monroe is Madisonville. Sweetwater covers a total of 8.849 square miles and has a population of 5,873. The city was incorporated in 1901. There are currently 56 registered sex offenders residing in the city.

Sweetwater operated with a Commission-Mayor form of local government. All members of the board are elected officials. Each commissioner is designated to be in charge of a City Department and the mayor is the governing head.The current mayor is Doyle Lowe.
