The Hamilton County Jail is a minimum to maximum-security facility and houses adult inmates who have been charged with misdemeanor and felony crimes. All inmates in custody are currently awaiting trial or serving out their sentence. The detention center is composed of 2 divisions: corrections and booking The corrections division provides 3 shifts of around the clock custody and control of the inmate population. The booking division is responsible for the intake and processing of all inmates coming into the jail. The Hamilton County Jail books approximately 25,000 inmates annually.

How to Send Mail to an Inmate

All inmate mail is scanned and distributed in electronic format. Inmates are allowed to receive letters, greeting cards and pictures not exceeding 4”x6” in size. Magazines and soft cover books are allowed if they are shipped directly from the publisher or bookstore and addressed properly to the inmate.

Money can be added to an inmate commissary account over the phone, online or by using the kiosk in the jail lobby. To add money over the phone, call 1-855-836-3364. Online deposits can be made using the 3rd party website, VendEngine.

Visitation Hours

Inmate visitation is based on the classification of the inmate. Contact the jail for information on specific visitation hours.
The Hamilton County Jail updates their inmate roster every 24 hours. Inmates are listed in the order they were booked. The inmate’s name, age, charges and arresting agency information is listed. There is also an option to search for a specific inmate by their last name.

The Hamilton County Jail lists the 12 most wanted fugitives in the county. The fugitive’s name, mugshot, charges and identifying scars, marks or tattoos are listed.

The Hamilton County Jail allows the public to search online for active warrants. Warrants can be located using the person’s first and last name.

Hamilton County Sheriff Information

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is a law enforcement agency located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The office has 4 main divisions: administration, corrections, investigations and uniform services. The administration division is composed of all the Sheriff’s Office command staff. They are responsible for records, internal affairs and finance. The corrections division oversees the Hamilton County Jail. The investigations division has detectives for domestic violence, fugitives, narcotics, personal crimes, property crimes and cold cases. The uniform services division is composed of patrol, traffic, civil process, court security, SWAT, marine, school resource and crisis prevention deputies.
